Course overview

This course is designed for individuals who are looking to apply for a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence class. During training and assessment you will cover the following core areas

Conducting pre-start vehicle checks
Correct, safe and efficient driving techniques (manoeuvring, reversing, power management, braking and positing the vehicle)
Fatigue management
Low risk driving behaviours
Managing emergencies and hazardous situations
Trip planning
Relevant legal requirements

What you can drive

hr

Heavy rigid vehicles are defined as a motor vehicle that has 3 or more axles and a gross vehicle mass greater than 8 tonnes.

If you are authorised to drive HR class vehicles you may drive any:
Motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle or motor carrier, that has at least 3 axles and GVM greater than 8 tonnes
Medium Rigid (MR), Light Rigid (LR), Car class (C)
Moped

Licence conditions – Heavy Rigid

Condition A; This is the most restrictive HR class as drivers are restricted to automatic vehicles
Condition B; Training and assessment is conducted with the synchromesh (single clutch) gearbox. Drivers are restricted to vehicles with either automatic or synchromesh gearboxes
Unrestricted; Training and assessment is conducted using a constant mesh ‘road ranger’ gear box, which requires operators to double clutch. This class is the least restrictive as drivers are able to drive automatic, synchromesh or road ranger HR class vehicles.

Pathways

Obtaining a HR licence can lead to higher class vehicles (HC or MC)
HR licence are used in many industries including those wishing to work in the transport, logistic, mining or civil sectors

Experience requirements

To be eligible to apply for a HR class licence, you must have one of the following Western Australian licence classes:
A Car (C class) licence for at least 2 years; or
A Light Rigid (LR class) heavy vehicle licence for at least 1 year; or
A Medium Rigid (MR class) heavy vehicle licence for at least 1 year

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Be able to read and write basic English
Minimum 18 years of age
Provide two forms of identification
You will be required to supply CMT Transport Trainers with your Unique Student Identifier, in order for it to be verified prior to issuance of your Statement of Attainment.

The amount of training will vary depending on an individual’s driving ability and experience. To provide you with the greatest flexibility we offer hourly lessons, one-day and two-day training blocks. Contact our experienced staff to discuss and tailor a driving plan to meet your needs.

One Day Course (HR Road Ranger)

This licence is for people that can supply written proof of training in a Road Ranger gearbox on registered roads. This does NOT include mine sites, farms and in a yard. You MUST supply a Third Party Verification form too book this course. (Available from our Downloads page, or call us to get a copy emailed through).
This form will be validated by CMT Transport Trainers BEFORE a One Day Course is booked.

This course consists of a Written Theory Test, 4 hours of driver training, the Driving Assessment Test and the PDA Assessment Fee. You will get a restricted HR-Auto licence ONLY.

Driving Assessment at the end with CMT Assessor

1 DAY HR-B SYNCHROMESH COURSE (SINGLE CLUTCH)

$895.00

This course consists of a Written Theory Test, 6 hours of driver training, the Driving Assessment Test and the PDA Assessment Fee. This course is done in the Synchro gearbox and you will get a Restricted licence to driving Synchro & Auto trucks/buses ONLY.

Driving Assessment at the end with CMT Assessor

2 DAY HR UNRESTRICTED ROADRANGER COURSE (DOUBLE CLUTCH)

$1255.00

This course consists of a Written Theory Test, 9 hours of driver training, the Driving Assessment Test and the PDA Assessment Fee. This licence has NO restrictions, and you can drive all Heavy Rigid trucks on this licence.
